Divock Origi has never set the world alight during his time at Liverpool.

Signed on the back of a promising World Cup campaign in 2014, the 23-year-old has enjoyed good form at Anfield in fits and starts but has never secured a regular place in the team.

He spent his first season out on loan with Lille - struggling for goals back in France - before being given his opportunity in the Premier League during the 2015-16 campaign.

Across two full seasons in the Liverpool first-team, he accumulated 21 goals in 77 appearances.

Certainly not a terrible return by any stretch of the imagine but not enough to convince Jurgen Klopp that he was part of his plans for last season, shipping him out on loan to Wolfsburg.

Rumours of Origi exit

And after such a promising start in the Bundesliga, Origi struggled for form and managed just six goals across his 34 outings in Germany.

Marry that to disappointing performances in pre-season for Liverpool this summer and it was widely expected that Origi would finally leave the club.

Borussia Dortmund looked to have been closing in on a deal for the Belgian forward after a surprising approach from Wolves fell through on Deadline Day.

Update on Origi's Liverpool future

However, the news broke on Friday afternoon that negotiations with Dortmund had hit a snag.

Liverpool were fixed on securing a permanent deal and failed to broker a loan deal that would see Dortmund sign him at the end of the season.

At this point, fans would probably imagine that Liverpool would search for a new suitor.

According to the Evening Standard, that's far from the case, though.

Origi could actually have a major part to play at Liverpool this season with the club now deciding to keep the player until the January transfer window at the very least.

The report goes on to note: "Klopp is now minded to retain the 23-year-old for the first half of the season at least, with his performances in training offering proof that he can make a positive contribution.

"Origi is believed to have stood out during a training game at Melwood earlier this week, and remains a popular member of the squad."

Talk about an unexpected update, especially when Origi's Liverpool career looked dead in the water.

He will obviously struggle for regular game-time with the immovable trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane but could have plenty to offer from the bench or in other competitions.

It seems Origi has been doing plenty in training to suggest he could have a future at Liverpool and these next four months will be crucial in dictating what happens in January.

Perform like he did in pre-season and he could be leaving in the winter, but perform like he has in training recently and his Anfield career could be saved.

Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke could be looking over their shoulders more than they'd like this season.
