Aaron Rodgers is the heart and soul of the Green Bay Packers, and with some of the new deals that have been handed out to quarterbacks this summer, he is due an extension.

If the Packers don't want to be tightly restricted on their salary cap when they sign their quarterback to a hefty extension, they must find money from somewhere to make the deal happen.

One option that many people have talked about is trading away Randall Cobb, and while those rumours have quickly been shut down, it's an option that Green Bay should take into consideration.

The reason why the Packers should consider parting ways with the wide receiver is because of the cap space which it could create.

Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac has stated that if the Packers trade Cobb, they’ll take on $3.65M in dead cap, clearing $9.06M of space, his salary for the team who would be acquiring him.

This $9 million in cap space could be used towards signing Rodgers to an extension with the team, securing the franchise's future at the quarterback position for years to come, rather than potentially losing him after the 2019 season.

Trading Cobb would also mean that Green Bay would get something in return for him, rather than potentially losing him for nothing next summer when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Cobb is currently the number two wideout on the Packers offense and he has a good rapport with his quarterback. Therefore, Rodgers might not be happy if Green Bay parts way with him.

He already expressed how annoyed he was that the Packers decided to part ways with Jordy Nelson this offseason, who is now signed with the Oakland Raiders.

Yet, over recent years, Cobb has had problems with injuries and inconsistencies in the past two seasons.

In 15 games in 2017, he only had 653 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 66 receptions. His 9.9 yards per catch last year is the lowest since his rookie season in 2011. Granted, he wasn't playing with Rodgers, but these numbers aren't that great.

The 2018 season could very well be Cobb's last season in Green Bay, but if they want Rodgers around for longer, it might be wise of them to trade him away now and take advantage of the cap space which he will provide as a result.
