It would be fair to say that Manchester City got the better of Manchester United last season.

The two Manchester clubs were tipped as the favourites for the Premier League, but there was only one winner in the end with the Citizens romping their way the title and a 19-point lead.

While United flagged in games they should have won, City kept churning out the victories and finished the campaign with just two defeats to their name.

However, when you consider how the two clubs competed directly against one another, the gap between United and City shrinks immediately.

Strictly speaking, last season finished 1-1 with both teams scoring victories away from home and succumbing to defeat in front of their own fans.

Last season's Manchester derbies

That came most unexpectedly in April when Pep Guardiola's men missed the opportunity to win the league in front of their rivals, dramatically spurning a 2-0 lead.

By that point, however, the title race had essentially been concluded and it was the meeting of the two clubs at Old Trafford in December that carried far more weight.

City won 2-1 thanks to goals from David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi, essentially sealing the championship in the process by extending their lead to 11 points.

Players watch talk on Man Utd set pieces

And while no footage after the match exists within the club's ground-breaking Amazon Prime series 'All or Nothing: Manchester City,' their preparations for the match certainly does.

The documentary is littered with insights into Guardiola's tactics and team-talks with a presentation delivered to the Man City players before their trip to Old Trafford.

Rather remarkably, the topic of the presentation is how United defended from set-pieces - a strategy that worked perfectly in the derby with both Silva and Otamendi scoring via corners.

Domenec Torrent delivers the video analysis, pointing out ways the Red Devils could be exposed from corners, before Guardiola rallied the troops and called them: 'the best team in the world.'

Now if that doesn't show the genius of Premier League tactics sometimes, we're not sure what does.

In applying such a focus to set pieces, City had identified a weakness in their rivals long before the game and it paid off to an incredible extent.

It was via set pieces that the Citizens claimed victory at Old Trafford, dealt a brutal blow to another title challenge and widened their league to the point they could not be caught.

United will be hoping to inflict suitable revenge during the 2018-19 campaign, but early signs don't look promising from their Manchester perspective.

While the reigning champions have begun with victories over Arsenal and Huddersfield with eight goals to boot, the Red Devils laboured against Leicester and were beaten by Brighton.

As long as Mourinho ensures his team wises up from set pieces, though, he can at least force Guardiola to think of something else when they meet again this season.

Over to you, Jose.
