Mesut Ozil has come under heavy criticism in the past few months. The German midfielder was attacked for his displays during the World Cup, leading him to retiring from international duty. And the poor form he showed in Russia has translated into his performances for Arsenal.Ozil was even hooked off after 68 minutes against Chelsea after failing to impress at Stamford Bridge.Ozil was expected to retain his place in the team against West Ham on Saturday afternoon. However, he missed out from the game altogether, with reports emerging early on Saturday stating that he would miss the clash through illness. Many fans wondered whether he was actually ill, and if recent reports are to be believed, they had every right to be skeptical.Joao Castelo-Branco, a journalist working for ESPN, has shed light on an incident between Emery and Ozil in training this week.He writes how the two had an argument during the week, which led to Ozil leaving the training session early. It's for that reason, and not because of illness, that Ozil has been dropped from the first XI.

He then provided a further update, stating that Emery intended to name Ozil on the bench.

But when the 29-year-old heard of Emery's decision, Ozil decided to not attend the game.

Wow. It seems Ozil really isn't in a very good place at the moment.

The cause of the argument has not been revealed, but it is still worrying that the German is coming to blows with his manager.

Paul Merson stated earlier this week how Emery should consider dropping Ozil, as well as Mkhitaryan, for their inability to function in the Spaniard's system.

"He hasn’t got the players to have a 20-yard gap between defence and attack, working hard. Ozil and Mkhitaryan are not those type of players," Merson told Sky Sports, per the Metro.

"If you were building a team tomorrow, you’d want to play a high pressing game, work as a team, not to have gaps between the lines, and you’re not buying Ozil and Mkhitaryan.

"If you go the Arsene Wenger way, wanting to play entertaining, free-flowing, great football, then Ozil and Mkhitaryan will walk in any team in the world.

"But they will not get in teams that want to press!

"I don’t know if the current crop have gone past being able to learn that way of playing. That’s my concern. I don’t mean regarding their age, but in the way they play the game.

"Ozil’s future? I don’t know. I’m a big fan of him, he’s a quality player, but sometimes you watch him and the game passes him by."
