Sebastian Vettel admits second place on the grid is a more than welcome result after the chaos that was Q3 in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. The German was set for a big battle with Lewis Hamilton and teammate Kimi Raikkonen for pole at Spa-Francorchamps, with the three drivers covered by less than a tenth of a second during the dry Q2 segment. However, much like Hungary a month ago, the weather scuppered the Italian team's chances as a sharp rain shower in the opening minutes of the final top 10 shoot-out forced all drivers to switch to the intermediate tyres.Indeed, both Vettel and Raikkonen were a little longer in the pits before heading back out, with the 31-year-old offering an insight into what was going on.“There was confusion!” he declared. “When all of a sudden it starts to rain like this, obviously from a team point of view you have to manage two cars.“Kimi was rushing to get back out and in the end now you look it is sunshine. It is nearly dry again.”Once on the track on the right tyres, it appeared the change in conditions wouldn't hurt Ferrari, as Raikkonen led from Vettel after the first flying laps, however, inside the cockpit the situation remained stressful.“The track was drying out, I wanted to save the tyres and I had a bit of traffic with Esteban [Ocon] in front," he explained."You know that any lap can be the lap, but equally you know the lap can be at the end if it continues to dry out.“Maybe I was not as calm as I can be in the car."

The whole complexion changed though when Hamilton produced another of his remarkable wet-weather laps, moving three seconds clear of the rest of the field with Vettel only able to get within seven-tenths of a second with his final effort.

"In the end, I am happy with P2, front row for tomorrow. We have strong pace and anything can happen," he said.

“I think we didn’t time it [the runs] great. Look, in these conditions, it can be anything.

“You might as well take second from where we are. I think we had the pace for pole but obviously, you will never find out.

“Q3 was a bit different. I think the gap was quite big so it was deserved for Lewis [Hamilton] to get the pole but tomorrow I am quite sure we have good pace in the car for the race.”
