The most high-profile transfer of the 2018 summer window was undoubtedly Cristiano Ronaldo's £99.2 million move to Juventus.

The Portuguese forward helped Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League and, in nine years, scored a stunning 450 goals in just 438 games.

After signing a four-year deal with the Italian champions, it means that Ronaldo and fellow all-time great Lionel Messi are no longer both in La Liga.

While Cristiano is yet to score for Juve, Messi already has two goals and a Spanish Super Cup triumph since becoming Barcelona captain.

It's the first time since the 2008-09 season that Messi and Ronaldo are playing in different leagues, but how did they compare the last time it happened? Let's take a look.

The 2008-09 season

For those who cannot remember, Messi's Barca and Ronaldo's Manchester United were at the very top of European football in 2008-09.

In fact, it was they who contested the 2009 Champions League final, with goals from Samuel Eto'o and Messi giving Pep Guardiola's side a 2-0 win in Rome.

Barca also won La Liga and the Copa del Rey that year, while Man Utd picked up the Premier League, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Community Shield.

How did Messi and Cristiano compare?

A 21-year-old Messi scored 23 goals in 31 La Liga outings as well as nine times in Europe and six more in the Copa del Rey.

Ronaldo, who turned 24 during the season, scored 18 goals in 33 Premier League matches and hit the back of the net eight more times in other competitions.

In total, Messi recorded 38 goals in 51 games (a goal every 1.34 matches), whereas Cristiano bagged 26 goals in 53 matches (one goal each 2.04 games on average).

While they both excel at goalscoring, Messi is regarded by many as the better playmaker, and the creative stats from nine years ago backed that up.

The Man United icon provided 12 assists for Sir Alex Ferguson's men in that campaign, five less than Leo Messi's tally of 17.

So, the Argentine was directly involved in 55 goals from just 51 matches in 2008-09, compared to 38 involvements in 53 appearances for Ronaldo.

What will happen in Messi v Ronaldo this season?

Messi outshone Ronaldo the last time they played in different domestic leagues and early signs suggest he'll do it again, but only a fool would write off Juventus' newboy.

The 33-year-old has recovered from slow starts before and time will tell if he'll perform better in Serie A than the magical Messi does in Spain.
