For a number of months now, speculation over Matt Hardy's wrestling future has been rife. In July, he posted a cryptic tweet thanking his fans for their support over his entire career, with a photo that suggested his retirement could be on the cards.

A NEW ROLE

On top of that, his wife Rebecca revealed that for SummerSlam, Matt adopted a backstage role, rather than competing.

It's believed that he wants to become part of WWE's production team down the line - but judging by how involved Hardy's already been, that could be sooner rather than later.

In fact, ahead of August's PPV, it seemed that the company were preparing to break up his tag team partnership with Bray Wyatt.

TAKING HIM OFF TV

In the build-up to SummerSlam, 'The Deleters of Worlds' had a number of run-ins with The B-Team, RAW's tag team champions.

It looked likely that Wyatt and Hardy would challenge for the gold in Brooklyn, but instead, it was The Revival who earned that opportunity instead.

As 'The Deleters of Worlds' are almost certainly out of the title picture now, it's likely we'll be seeing much less of Hardy on TV.

In fact, he could have already wrestled his last match in WWE.

A SEND OFF?

At Sunday's live event in Rochester, New York, Hardy teamed with Wyatt once again.

According to Wrestling Inc, after the match, they stayed in the ring and received a standing ovation (despite losing) as Matt then threw up his trademark symbol before heading backstage.

After the event, he took to Twitter once again - this time, thanking fans for their 'send off'.

"Thank you for a WONDERFUL & HEARTWARMING send off tonight, #WWERochester. I appreciate you," he wrote.

THE FUTURE IS UNCLEAR

Officially, Hardy's future is up in the air at the moment as he recovers from injury - he's now apparently going to return to North Carolina to begin an extensive rehab programme.

Only after he's finished that will we know if Matt really is going to retire, or if he's going to come back for one final run.
