The biggest compliment you can pay Virgil van Dijk right now is that absolutely nobody is talking about his price-tag.

Liverpool signed the Dutchman for £75 million in the January transfer window - a fee that raised plenty of eyebrows.

But Van Dijk has been worth every penny.

He’s completely transformed Liverpool’s defensive record with the Reds yet to concede a goal this season.

While Liverpool will be glad to have finally landed their man, there must be plenty of clubs kicking themselves for not snapping up a bargain earlier on in his career,

Van Dijk spent two seasons in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic after they signed him for just £2.6 million from Groningen.

And it didn’t take long for him to show that he’s capable of playing at the very highest level.

In fact, during his first season for Celtic, he produced a remarkable performance against Barcelona - although he did benefit from Lionel Messi’s absence on the night.

Back in October 2013, a 22-year-old Van Dijk lined up against Barcelona in the Champions League and seriously impressed against the likes of Neymar, Andres Iniesta and Alexis Sanchez.

And individual highlights of his performance on that night have emerged.

Take a look:

Despite Van Dijk’s best efforts, Celtic lost 1-0 due to Cesc Fabregas’ header 15 minutes from time.

They certainly weren’t helped by Scott Brown’s sending off on the hour mark.

After that match, Van Dijk lasted a further 20 months at Celtic Park before Southampton purchased him for just £13 million.

However, Celtic boss at the time, Ronny Deila, admitted that Van Dijk probably wasn’t in the best shape when he arrived at the club.

“Virgil was special but when I came in I don’t think he was fit. He had things to work on and in training he was lazy," he said.

“I told him those things and that he had to work on getting 100 per cent in every session and to take care of his body.

“When he said he was going I told him not to go to Southampton or Sunderland but straight to Manchester City or United. I said to him he was that good. I told City and they regret it now.”
