Anthony Martial's stagnation at Manchester United has been a worrying topic for some time now.

The Frenchman has managed just 19 goals in the last two seasons and hasn't found the back of the net since January.

Back at the start of the year, it looked as if Martial had finally won the trust of Jose Mourinho and was playing with confidence once again.

But the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January seems to have put the former Monaco man back into a negative spiral.

Off-field issues with the manager haven't helped and it was thought that he would move on from Old Trafford in the summer.

A move didn't materialise and many United fans were surprised to see a report from the Times this week claiming that Martial would be offered a new five-year contract.

It was thought that Ed Woodward was going against Mourinho's wishes in negotiating a new deal with a player the manager doesn't appear keen on.

Some reports even claimed that Martial was a pawn in a power struggle between the two men at the club.

But the Mirror have issued a report claiming a very different reaction from the United boss.

Apparently, Mourinho is fully on board with offering the forward a new deal and talks between United and Martial are progressing nicely.

It's a welcome reprieve from negativity for United fans, with Martial one of the most popular figures among supporters.

He was left out of the squad entirely for the 3-0 loss to Tottenham, but everyone is aware of the talent he possesses.

Whether Mourinho is simply trying to avoid antagonising fans further by going against Martial or he has actual faith in him is yet to be revealed.

United travel to Burnley on Sunday before the international break and it will be interesting to see whether the Frenchman makes the match day squad this time around.
