On last week's episode of SmackDown Live, new tag team champions were crowned.

A few nights earlier, at SummerSlam, The Bludgeon Brothers were able to hold onto their gold after losing by disqualification to The New Day.

But, in a no DQ match just 48 hours later, the challengers got their revenge.

FIVE-TIME CHAMPS

After Kofi Kingston draped Luke Harper over a table in the center of the ring, Xavier Woods came crashing down from the top rope, flooring his opponent with a massive elbow.

It was enough to ensure that Harper stayed down for the three count and The New Day picked up the win - and they'll now begin their fifth reign as tag team champs.

In fact, only three teams - Edge and Christian, The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz, have held the belts more times than Kingston, Woods and Big E have.

So, it's fair to say that as a stable, The New Day have been pretty successful.

But according to Big E himself, things weren't always this simple. Actually, if one WWE legend had his way, the group wouldn't have even got off the ground.

SERIOUS CONCERNS

While speaking to Complex, Big E revealed that before the trio debuted in 2014, Big Show was so concerned about the idea that he approached Kingston to see what the deal was.

"So when we were trying to get off the ground, Big Show would pull Kofi aside and say, 'What are you doing with those two? They're bringing you down'," E revealed, per Wrestling Inc.

Apparently, it wasn't just Show who wasn't behind the idea, because as Big E goes on to explain, The New Day feared that they could get fired if the gimmick failed.

"This isn't a time where it's like, 'Oh Big Show, it's all fun and games.' Like, we're struggling to get on TV and we're thinking we're gonna get fired."

CHANGING ATTITUDES

Of course, as we now know, the stable have been a complete success - and are three of WWE's most loved superstars.

Big Show clearly noticed how well they were doing too, because following their initial success, he actually apologised to the trio for doubting them - as Woods explains.

"To his credit, out of all the people who did say things to our face or said things behind our back, [Big Show] is the one person who came up and said, 'I was completely wrong.'

"'You guys are awesome and you're killing it and I'm glad that you didn't listen to me.'"
