Paris Saint-Germain have dominated Ligue 1 in recent years.

PSG have claimed five of the previous six titles in France, with Monaco picking up their eighth title during the 2016/17 campaign.

But during PSG’s first seasons following their Qatar Sports Investment during the 2011/12 season, they fell short.

That’s despite spending £82 million under Carlo Ancelotti.

The champions that season?

Montpellier, of course - whose odds were 80/1 at the start of the season and had finished 14th in the previous season.

Before that incredible title-winning campaign, Montpellier’s trophy cabinet consisted of just three Ligue 2 and two Coupe de la Ligues.

But what did their squad look like?

Well, more than six years on from their amazing success, we’ve had a look at what’s happened to them since:

Goalkeeper | Geoffrey Jourdren

Jourdren is a bit of a Montpellier legend, playing for the club for 11 seasons.

Last summer, he eventually left to join Nancy in Ligue 2.

Right Back | Garry Bocaly

Bocaly was blighted by injury following Montpellier’s title win and barely played football again. He left the club in 2014 and played one further season for Arles-Avignon.

He retired at the age of 27.

Centre Back | Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Montpellier’s title win seemed to enhance Yanga-Mbiwa’s career. He stayed at the champions for one further season before making a £8.5 million move to Newcastle, where he stayed for two years.

A season at Roma followed before he returned to France to play for Lyon, where he remains.

Centre Back | Hilton

Now, this is a proper club legend.

Hilton might be 40-years-old now but he’s still at Montpellier - the club he joined back in 2011.

The Brazilian has made 227 appearances for the club.

Left Back | Henri Bedimo

Like many players, the left-back stayed at Montpellier for one further season after winning Ligue 1.

The Cameroonian then moved to Lyon for three seasons before signing for Marseille in 2016 - a club he currently plays for.

Centre Midfield | Benjamin Stambouli

Stambouli played 130 times for Montpellier before signing for Tottenham in September 2014. But the Frenchman left after just one season at White Hart Lane, making 25 appearances.

One season at PSG followed before a move to Germany to join Schalke, where he currently finds himself.

Centre Midfield | Jamel Saihi

Saihi joined Montpellier in 2000 as a 13-year-old and stayed there for 16 years, playing 172 times.

He signed for Angers in 2016 before he retired.

Right Wing | John Utaka

Utaka left Portsmouth for Montpellier in January 2011 and was lifting the Ligue 1 title 16 months later.

Utaka left Montpellier in 2013 before playing in Turkey and Egypt.

The 36-year-old now finds himself in the fourth-tier of French football, playing for  Championnat National 2 side CS Sedan Ardennes.

Attacking midfield | Younes Belhanda

Belhanda was an important player in Montpellier’s title-winning side, being awarded the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year, the Goal of the Year and was selected for the Team of the Year.

He made the surprise move to Dynamo Kiev in 2013, where he remained for three seasons.

Loan spells at Schalke and Nice followed before a move to Galatasaray in Turkey.

Still only 28, Belhanda has made 49 appearances for his country, Morocco.

Left Wing | Remy Cabella

Another exciting youngster that helped Montpellier to glory during the 2011/12 season. Like Yanga-Mbiwa, he signed for Newcastle in 2014 and, despite playing 31 times in the league that season, he left after just one year.

A loan to Marseille followed before a permanent move.

The 28-year-old is now at Saint-Etienne and has made four appearances for France.

Striker | Olivier Giroud

The main man.

Giroud scored 25 goals during Montpellier’s title-winning season but left that summer for Arsenal.

Five-and-a-half seasons spent at the Emirates returned 105 goals and three FA Cups, before he made the switch to Chelsea in January 2018.
