For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award was won by somebody not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Luka Modric picked up the honour earlier this week after producing several midfield masterclasses as Real Madrid won a third consecutive Champions League.

Many people feel the humble Croat was a deserving winner, but it's safe to say that the decision hasn't gone down well with Cristiano or those close to him.

Ronaldo's agent claimed it was "ridiculous" and shameful" that his client didn't win the award, while the player himself was less than impressed by the snub.

Now, Modric's national team manager has weighed in on the debate, and he's absolutely destroyed Ronaldo for his attitude and reaction in the process.

Modric wins UEFA award ahead of Cristiano

Before joining Juventus, Cristiano topped the 2017-18 Champions League scoring charts with an incredible 15 goals from just 13 appearances.

The Portuguese icon and Modric are now ex-teammates, but Zlatko Dalic knows the latter very well given his exploits at this summer's World Cup.

The Croatia manager saw his influential 32-year-old captain star for Madrid last term before guiding their country all the way to the World Cup final in Russia.

Dalic reacts to Ronaldo's egotistical mindset

Despite not being surprised by Ronaldo's anger at not winning the UEFA award, Dalic has launched an attack on the 33-year-old as a person.

The 51-year-old told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti, via Goal: "(Cristiano) Ronaldo not attending the UEFA ceremony and those comments about Luka winning it...

"It is not worthy of my comment! It only proves what I keep saying: Ronaldo is an egotist and I'd never want him in my team!"

Dalic continued: “He is the kind of player that only thinks 'no matter if we lose, the only thing that matters is that I score a goal!’.”

Should Cristiano have reacted differently?

Dalic didn't hold back whatsoever with his scathing assessment of Ronaldo, who did win the prize for 2017-18 UEFA Forward of the Season.

The Juventus superstar's reaction to Modric pipping him to the main award certainly could have been better when you think the pair spent six great years together in Spain.
