Real Madrid's La Liga season really has got off to the perfect start.

Los Blancos have won their first three games of 2018/19, scoring 10 goals in the process and conceding just twice.

Getafe were beaten 2-0 on the opening weekend, Girona were then thrashed 4-1 and Leganes faced the exact same scoreline at the Bernabeu on Saturday evening.

Gareth Bale scored his third in three games, with Karim Benzema on the scoresheet twice, taking his tally to four for the season.

Sergio Ramos also converted his second penalty of the season.

All looks well for Julen Lopetegui in the post Cristiano Ronaldo era, with Marco Asensio also thriving in the Portuguese's absence.

So it begs the question, are they better off without the 33-year-old superstar? It's an argument that's all over Twitter right now.

And one Real Madrid fan account, @XavsFutbol, has given a very interesting point on the idea that Benzema is finally thriving without Ronaldo's 'shackles'.

He wrote: "Not having this ‘Ronaldo was dragging Benzema down’ argument. If you actually took the time to watch some non-CL Madrid games, you’d have seen how many clear-cut chances Karim used to miss, hell the whole team was a mess most of the time.

"This is simply Benzema stepping up."

It's a valid point. Benzema enjoyed his best goalscoring seasons with Ronaldo in the team and managed just two goals in the 12 games the Portuguese was absent last season.

Fans provided some more tweets to add further clarity to the situation.

THE BENZEMA DEBATE BEGINS

Lopetegui praised Benzema to the rafters after the Leganes win, saying: "Why shouldn't he finish with 30 or 40 goals?

"The most important thing is the team and goals are the work of the whole team. Benzema is a great player and always has been.

"What he's doing is credit to him. He's happy and is helping the team, and it'll stay like this."

Only time will tell. One thing is certain, Ronaldo is not finding life easy in Italy without the selfless Benzema, going three straight Serie A games without finding the back of the net.
