Steven Gerrard tasted defeat in his first Old Firm derby as Rangers manager on Sunday afternoon. The Liverpool legend was powerless to prevent his side slumping to a 1-0 defeat at Celtic Park, with Olivier Ntcham scoring the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute.Ntcham converted from close range after a swift counter-attack from the home side, although Gerrard was left incensed with referee Willie Collum. The 38-year-old was convinced his team should have been awarded a foul when Tom Rogic robbed Ryan Jack just inside the Celtic half. However, Collum saw nothing wrong with the challenge and allowed Celtic to play on, with Ntcham eventually scoring what would prove to be the winner.Gerrard made his feelings towards Collum crystal clear in his post-match interview. The Liverpool legend said “the referee cost us” - and this, needless to say, didn’t go down well with Celtic fans on social media.

Gerrard blames referee for Rangers' defeat

"It's definitely a foul,” he said, per the Daily Record. “I’ve been around the game a very, very long time and that's a foul in my book.

"It's actually a foul in the fourth official's book as well because he's shouting down the mic ‘foul, foul, foul’.

"The referee has ignored the information, we can both see it clearly - it's a foul. And then they go and score the goal.

"I went in and had a calm chat [with the officials] and wondered why he hasn't listened to the fourth official, and how he hasn't seen a clearly swipe from Rogic on Ryan Jack.

"Jack gets his body in between the ball and the man and he gets swiped - it's a clear foul. It's blatant.

"If we'd have lost the game today with a moment of class or a bit of brilliance from Celtic, I'd hold my hands up - but the referee has cost us."

Sutton reacts to Gerrard's comments on Twitter

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, meanwhile, couldn’t resist tweeting after hearing what Gerrard had said immediately after the match.

He tweeted: “Gerrard ‘the referee cost us’ ... I thought it was a foul but [Allan] McGregor should have gone as well!

“Bottom line Celtic walloped Rangers..Gerrard should have been more gracious and given Celtic more credit.”

Sutton has a point. In truth, the scoreline could - and perhaps should - have been far worse for Rangers.

Celtic dominated the match and could easily have won by a greater margin.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had 57 per cent possession and 16 shots compared to Rangers’ six. They also struck the woodwork four times.

Gerrard’s side only managed two shots on target over the course of the 90 minutes and were often camped back deep inside their own half.

Gerrard refused to give Celtic credit for their victory and struggled to be gracious in defeat.

Rangers' worst start for 29 years

Sutton also pointed out that this is now Rangers’ worst start to a league campaign since the 1989-90 campaign - an extremely concerning statistic for Gerrard and the club’s fans.

Rangers currently find themselves seven in the Scottish Premiership table with five points from their first four games.
