Markovic seemingly prefers to collect his £35,000-per-week wages, when the opportunity to play was presented to him.

Markovic's tweet to Anderlecht

The Echo claim that Liverpool are now resigned to Markovic leaving for nothing either in January or at the end of the campaign.

The 24-year-old hasn’t done himself any favours. He even managed to upset Anderlecht, who blamed the winger for the failed transfer.

“Our president and sports director did everything to convince Markovic,” manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck said.

“It’s his own fault that the deal fell through.”

Markovic attempted to explain what went wrong with a tweet on Monday - but he might have complicated matters further.

He claims that money wasn’t the issue. But nobody believes him.

“Thank you for making such a great effort for trying to get me back in the club,” Markovic wrote.

“However, money was not the issue !!!!! Good luck in the future 💜@rscanderlecht.”

If money wasn’t the issue, then what was?

That was the question on the minds of Liverpool fans, who quickly set about doubting Markovic.

You're not fooling anyone, Lazar.

It'll be interesting to hear if Klopp has a response to Markovic's tweet.

Markovic’s time at Liverpool has been a complete disaster.

The Reds paid Benfica £20m for him in the summer of 2014 but he hasn’t featured for them since May 2015.

He’s spent time on loan at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull City and Anderlecht, and his permanent departure can’t come soon enough for Liverpool.
