Manchester United didn’t have too much luck in the summer transfer window.Jose Mourinho only managed to sign three players, failing to land a central defender he so badly craved. The highest-profile arrival was Fred, signed from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52 million. However, the Brazilian midfielder hasn’t made the greatest of starts to his United career and was an unused substitute during the Red Devils’ 2-0 victory at Burnley last weekend.Another unused sub at Turf Moor was Lee Grant.United snapped up the 35-year-old goalkeeper to fulfil their homegrown quota in their Premier League squad. But their third summer signing wasn’t even on the bench. That’s because Diogo Dalot is still recovered from a knee injury he picked up in May.

But Dalot did pull on the famous red shirt last week for United Under-23s in a clash against Stoke Under-23s at Old Trafford.

The right-back played 78 minutes during a 1-0 win for the home side.

And Mourinho was in attendance.

But what did he think of Dalot’s first appearance at the Theatre of Dreams?

Well, according to Manchester Evening News, Mourinho was “pleased but not surprised”.

Sources close to the player have told the local newspaper that the Portuguese boss was encouraged by what he saw last Friday.

It’s unknown whether Dalot will remain with the Under-23’s for their match against Reading next week.

Originally, United’s Carabao Cup clash with Derby on September 25 had been penciled in as the ideal occasion for Dalot to make his first-team debut.

And that could well prove to be the case as the 19-year-old Portuguese starlet works his way back from injury.
