Manchester United fans would love nothing more than to see Anthony Martial reach his potential.

Since making his high-profile move to the club back in 2015, supporters have been wondering whether Martial would kick on and evolve into the world-beater that many have predicted him to become.

However, that electrifying first season seems a distant memory now and Martial has struggled for a consistent run of form since the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

That culminated in an explosive interview with Martial's agent - Philippe Lamboley - that included with him claiming that his client wanted to leave the club.

Speaking to RMC Sport, he stated: “After reflecting carefully on all the possibilities and all the parameters, Anthony has decided he wants to leave Manchester United.

Rumours of new Martial contract

"There are many reasons, for the moment it’s too early to say. Anthony will explain in more detail later on."

Fast forward to September, though, and it seems Martial could be staying with the Red Devils after all with reports of a potential five-year contract doing the rounds.

It's news that has caught the eye of a certain Sam Allardyce, who feels rather strongly about the fact Martial could be given another half-decade to breakthrough.

Sam Allardyce delivers his Martial verdict

He, for one, isn't convinced and slammed Martial during an appearance on Alan Brazil's Sport Breakfast.

“I’m very surprised if they have offered him a five-year contract in all honesty," Allardyce remarked.

“The lad is in his fourth season at Manchester United and I don’t think anybody would actually say he has delivered consistently.

“We’ve seen the odd flash of his brilliance, but by now he should be showing that brilliance on a more regular basis.

“He should be hitting top form more often than not.

“He’s had two managers now and both managers have found it difficult to find him a regular place in the Man United side.”

Allardyce has made his opinion of the Frenchman very, very clear.

There is little doubting that Martial has frustrated fans with his slow development in recent years but there's great reason to suggest he could still perform for them.

A new contract at Old Trafford would show the kind of trust that Martial needs behind him right now and, with greater game-time, United fans could see the best of him.

It would also put an end to all the transfer rumours which have linked Martial with everyone from Tottenham to Juventus this summer.

He has reached a crossroads in his career and judging by Allardyce's reaction, this new contract is such a gift that Martial can't afford to turn it down.
