Jose Mourinho has managed to divide opinion on him at Manchester United since before he was appointed at Old Trafford.

The former Porto, Chelsea, Internazionale, and Real Madrid boss had built a reputation as a little difficult to work with, quite egotistical, and as someone whose 'win at all costs' mentality didn't mesh with many at the top level.

The likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Bobby Charlton were allegedly against his appointment but the lack of progress under Louis van Gaal appeared to trump that.

Two trophies in his first season have given Mourinho something to always hold onto with United but his second season went trophyless - although a second-place finish was certainly impressive, considering Manchester City's relentless campaign.

Now, however, things have looked to unravel a bit as results haven't provided an antidote to what is comfortably the least entertaining football in the Premier League's top six.

Defeats to Brighton and Tottenham in United's first three games came after a summer of division that saw Mourinho seemingly at odds with his bosses over the club's transfer strategy.

Victory over Burnley before the international break tempered fears somewhat, although there's still a little way to go.

And United legend Eric Cantona has weighed in on the state of things right now - and especially the manager.

"[Things are] not so good, but it is early in the season - too early to tell," he told the Daily Mail. "Manchester United is a great club and will always be great. They will win things, I know they will.

"But the way they play? Not good. The manager has them playing the wrong way for the fans. No fun, no creativity."

As for who should be in charge, Cantona believes there's an obvious name.

"I like Mourinho. He has a good personality but not for United - they should have [Pep] Guardiola as coach. He should be there, but he is doing magic with that other club. The club I cannot name.

"Listen, I joke about Manchester City but they are playing great football - it's just that I think Guardiola should be at United.

He is the spiritual child of Johan Cruyff; he played under Cruyff at Barcelona and learned everything from him. He's the only person who should be at United."

It's safe to say that ship has sailed but if Mourinho wants to prove that he's the best fit for United, it's obvious what he has to do: best Guardiola to that Premier League title.
