Arsenal fans are yet to see Bernd Leno in a competitive football match.

The German arrived at the Emirates Stadium in June with hopes of being the club’s No.1.

But Petr Cech has retained that status and Unai Emery seemingly has no intentions of making a change.

That comes despite Cech making a shaky start to the season.

Emery wants his goalkeepers to pass out from the back but Cech looks really uncomfortable doing so.

He’s simply not Manuel Neuer or Ederson.

Many Arsenal fans want to see a change between the sticks but Emery will persist with the 37-year-old.

Leno concerns

“He is working very hard on the training pitch,” the Arsenal boss said after the 3-2 win over Cardiff.

“I want him to continue to do this and to keep improving, it is important.”

It says something about Leno that he can’t displace Cech, who is way beyond his prime.

Arsenal correspondent Charles Watts has shared his own theory as to why Leno isn’t playing - and it’s pretty concerning.

Watts believes that the former Bayer Leverkusen ‘keeper must be having issues in training, either with shot stopping or dealing with crosses.

“None of us have seen what Leno has been like in training - there must be a reason why Emery isn’t playing him,” Watts said.

“The fact that Cech is still starting given how uneasy he is with the ball at his feet raises big questions about Leno in my opinion.

“We know he is good in terms of his distribution and playing out from the back - so there must be issues in terms of coming for crosses or shot stopping.

“I did hear that he made a major error in a behind closed doors friendly with Brentford that resulted in a goal.

“We will get to see him soon in the Europa League and Carabao Cup so we’ll be able to judge him for ourselves.”

Watts raises a good point.

Emery places a great deal of importance in distribution and that’s an area where Leno is better than Cech.

So why haven’t we seen him in the Premier League yet?
