Amir Khan probably didn’t expect that the second fight of his comeback against Samuel Vargas would go the distance. The Bolton-born boxer knocked out Phil lo Greco in 39 seconds back in April and, although Vargas represented tougher opposition than the Canadian, Khan would have been hoping to register another speedy knockout as he bids to get himself back in contention for world titles.Vargas, however, produced a spirited performance and even knocked Khan down in the second round.Khan recovered in front of the stunned crowd at Arena Birmingham, though, and went on to record a unanimous points victory. The Englishman’s class told and he maintained control late on for a 119-108 119-109 118-110 win. After the fight, a bruised Vargas told iFL TV: “I fell short. I should have been more cautious. I almost had him.“He’s a great boxer, he’s got a lot of experience and that showed but we’ll keep working.”

Vargas posts classy tweet after losing to Khan

He also posted a very classy tweet, which says a lot about his character.

“I came to fight. I didn't win the fight,” he tweeted. “I hope I won the hearts of fans and made some new ones. Thanks for having me UK.”

Boxing fans have reacted by telling the Colombia-born fighter that he did himself proud and can hold his head up high…

As for Khan, well, he now wants to fight Manny Pacquiao - although the chances of that happening appear to be slim.

"The only fight that works for me over Kell Brook is Manny Pacquiao," Khan was quoted as saying by BBC Sport after the fight. "I want him. He is my number one pick. If not, we go back to the drawing board and if it's Kell Brook it's Kell Brook."

“I want a super-fight with a massive name and I’d love it in a stadium,” said Khan, who improved his professional record to 33 wins, 20 by knockout, and four defeats, added per the Guardian.

“I still love training, still love to learn and still want to fight the best.”
