With the likes of young drivers such as Esteban Ocon and George Russell being unable to find seat for next season's campaign, Mercedes have proposed an interesting concept which hasn't gone down too well with other manufacturers.

Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has posed the idea of introducing a third car to help maintain youth prospects.

As mentioned before, Ocon and Russell are struggling to find seats at other manufacturers based upon their affiliation with Mercedes.

However, a host of teams have had their say about the concept, the first being Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.

"It's an interesting one," Horner shared.

"But the practicalities of running three-car teams – there's things like pitstops – it's a very complicated thing to do.

"Interesting on concept, but once you get into the practicalities of it, it's very, very complex. I can't see the midfield being particularly happy with it."

Red Bull seemed to be fairly open to the idea, but did recognise the faults and complications of the concept.

However, Williams has announced that they are completely against the introduction of a third car.

"We wouldn't be in favor of three cars," said Claire Williams, the deputy team principal of Williams.

"You've got team collaborations and then you're going to have three cars. Where does this end? It's another step in the wrong direction.".

On the other hand, McLaren boss Zak Brown has openly said that he supports the idea of a third car as it would enable his team to keep ahold of youth prospect Lando Norris for 2019.

Although, he did recognise the difficulties that such a change would bring.

"I like the idea of third cars, but how do you manage that?

"I think there's room on the grid, but not for everyone to have one. Maybe you have them at certain races, but it's got to be equal and fair."

Whether this will be introduced or not, it would help keep highly talented youngsters at high-level teams, but the only issue appears to be the practicality of introducing a third car in an already packed-out grid.
