England's UEFA Nations League campaign started off with a loss as they were defeated 2-1 by Spain on Saturday night.

Marcus Rashford opened the scoring for the Three Lions, but goals later on in the first-half from Saul Niguez and Rodrigo gave the away side the victory.

Gareth Southgate bemoaned the fact England had not produced a player in the mould of Paul Gascoigne that can dominate the midfield.

"The only one in my lifetime is Paul Gascoigne and I'm not sure he was developed, I think he was a consequence of a unique talent," he said after the game.

"I think what is happening at junior level is that there is more emphasis on technical ability, there is more, right from five, six, seven-year-olds, there is more emphasis on being able to handle the ball and play.

"We're seeing that with some of our junior teams. But we can see there's a period of time for those players to come through.

"Spain have had a production line for a long period of time.

"Look at those who have gone and those that come into the team. Of that type of player, they've produced more than any other team in the world."

Gascoigne has now responded to Southgate's comments - and he's done so brilliantly.

The 51-year-old commented that he was not surprised by Southgate's comments and that it is 'impossible' that there will be another Gascoigne.

"I wasn't too surprised when I heard what Gareth Southgate had to say about me," he said in an interview with the Sun.

"He was right, wasn’t he? I was the best. There will never be another Paul Gascoigne.

"I’m the only Paul Gascoigne and I would never put that pressure on a player to be the next one.

"It’s impossible. I’m not being big-headed, it’s just impossible. I don’t think we’ll see anyone like me in the next 20 years. Unfortunately.

"I knew how good I was and when I was on the ball, there wasn’t a problem. For those 90 minutes on the pitch, nobody could touch me, nobody."

Brilliant. Typically honest from the 51-year-old.

Gascogine also sent a tweet responding to Southgate's comments on Monday.

He wrote: "Cheers Gareth I’ll be there tomorrow. I take a size 9 I’ll see what I can do, I’ll pop down and see you. Good luck mate and thanks for the kind words mate."
