England and Switzerland showed on Tuesday night exactly why UEFA decided to introduce the Nations League. One of the main reasons for the new competition was to get rid of meaningless friendlies.Of course, with three nations in some groups, some friendlies do have to be played in the meantime. At Leicester’s King Power Stadium, an under-strength England side faced Switzerland with them playing out a rather drab exhibition match.Gareth Southgate’s side did pick up the victory, thanks to Marcus Rashford’s second-half strike from Kyle Walker’s deep cross.A possible reason for the lack of quality on show may have been down to the fact that the players on the pitch have had very few Premier League minutes this season. The likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Fabian Delph, Marcus Rashford and Danny Welbeck have all been struggling to play regularly in the top-flight this season and were all given the opportunity to impress by Southgate. And there were also a couple of Swiss players that were given much needed minutes after signing for Premier League clubs.Xherdan Shaqiri has been restricted to substitute appearances for Liverpool, while Stephan Lichtsteiner is yet to play a competitive minute at Arsenal. The 34-year-old captained Switzerland against England and Arsenal fans would have been pleased to catch a glimpse of him.But it seems rival fans weren’t particularly happy to see him.Lichsteiner was booked for a strong tackle on Danny Rose and Twitter was full of fans hating on his rough style of play.Check out the reaction:

Of course, that’s part of the reason Arsenal signed the right-back in the first place.

His experience, leadership - and no-nonsense style of play - is exactly what’s needed at the Emirates.

He may not have too many supporters outside the Emirates though…
