We’re only four matches into the new Premier League and many Manchester United fans have already given up hope of a title challenge.

Defeats to Brighton and Tottenham mean United are six points behind Liverpool, Chelsea and Watford at this early stage.

And bookmakers rate them as 40/1 fifth-favourites to win the Premier League this season, behind Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs.

It doesn’t help that manager Jose Mourinho has cut a frustrated figure throughout, while Paul Pogba is constantly in the media casting doubt over his future.

But if United aren’t going to win the league this season, where will they finish?

Finishing outside the top-four is almost unimaginable for Mourinho’s side considering the amount of money they’ve spent in recent years.

But Mourinho’s failure to sign a defender this summer could cost them dearly.

And former United right-back Gary Neville has made a prediction about how his former side will fare this season - and he’s not holding out much hope of a title challenge.

“Still hopeful that somehow, through siege mentality more than anything, they can mount some sort of challenge that really just disrupts people,” Neville told The Times.

“If they can stay in it until January and maybe get one or two defenders in, they may have a chance, but I doubt it.

“I think United will be third or fourth.

“Believe it or not I liked the Tottenham game [when United lost 3-0], certainly the first 40 minutes.

“I watched [the win over] Burnley and thought it was really good. I am hopeful they have turned a corner.”

While that 2-0 victory at Turf Moor was impressive, United face a tough trip to Watford this weekend.

The Hornets have won all four of their matches this season and, on Saturday evening, we’ll discover whether that win at Burnley really was the turning point in United’s campaign.
