Eyebrows were raised last week when it was revealed that Mick Foley was returning to Raw for an appearance.

It was initially thought that Foley would discuss the Hell in a Cell match with both Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman, who will do battle for the Universal Championship inside the structure this Sunday.

But it was announced by Michael Cole that he would be reminiscing on the 20-year anniversary of his famous clash with The Undertaker at the 1998 King of the Ring.

He ended up doing just that, but also went face-to-face with Elias, who predictably insulted Foley, who stated that the 'Drifter' would be a future WWE Champion.

And it was confirmed in that segment by Foley that he would indeed referee the bout between Reigns and Strowman, proving there was a purpose for his visit to New Orleans after all.

Foley has refereed before inside the huge structure, way back in 2003 when Triple H defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Kevin Nash at Bad Blood.

That bout saw Foley take a chair shot from 'The Game' before recovering to count his win, but according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, as per Cageside Seats, Foley will not be taking any bumps at all during the match.

This could be down to the fact Foley underwent both hip and knee surgery in 2017, and the company don't want to risk anything when it comes down to his health.

But there's also another reason as to why Foley has been ushered in to wear the striped shirt at the pay-per-view.

Debuting straight after the event is a special one-man show that he filmed in Pittsburgh at the start of 2018, and is scheduled to run for one-and-a-half hours on the WWE Network.

There's always a reason for a special appearance, and Vince McMahon has proved once again that he's a marketing genius.

As we know in wrestling though, accidents can happen, so let's hope Foley stays safe inside the Cell on Sunday.
