Liverpool are still looking to win their first ever Premier League trophy and this year may represent their best chance to date.

However, an incredible Manchester City stands in their way.

Pep Guardiola’s side are odds-on favourites to win their second consecutive league title but Liverpool are considered their biggest challengers this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won all four of the league matches so far and sit top of the table at this early stage.

And the possibility of them winning the Premier League is all too real for rival fans - like Gary Neville.

“As a United fan, I am very concerned about them,” Neville told The Times.

"The football they are playing under Jürgen Klopp, it’s fantastic. As a United fan, that’s a worry because it is still that mentality of ‘anyone but them’”.

But Neville actually offered Klopp some advice.

The former right-back suggested that if the German wants to win the league, he should forget all about the Champions League.

"The Champions League - if I was Liverpool, I would kick it into touch,” Neville said.

"I know that's very hard to do but if they could go into February, March, April without it, I think they could have a real chance if they had free weeks.

"Why? I think their method is exhausting for the front three [Salah, Mane and Firmino].

"The drop in quality below them, if there are injuries or playing Wednesday, Saturday, I think it will take its toll.”

It’s a very controversial idea - especially when Liverpool reached the Champions League final last season experiencing some magical moments on the way to Kiev.

And there’s no reason why the Reds can’t go one better and win the competition for a sixth time.

KLOPP HITS BACK AT NEVILLE'S SUGGESTIONS

One man that certainly disagrees with Neville is Klopp.

He was asked about Neville’s view and responded exactly how you’d expect.

"How would that work?” Klopp asked the reporter during his press conference.

“We don't play Champions League or what? Gary should come over and tell me exactly how that works. How do you prepare for a game when you don't focus on it? I don't understand, we play our kids or what? That would be funny.

"To focus on one competition can only be if you are already out, or nearly out, or if it's late in the season. Last year I don't think even Gary Neville would have said 'let City win in the Champions League.’ Sitting in an office talking about football is different to doing the job.

"What did he say about Manchester United in that case? The club he’s more interested in. Nothing?”

Well said, Jurgen.
