Liverpool have enjoyed an almost flawless start to the 2018-19 campaign, picking up four wins from their opening four Premier League fixtures, conceding just one goal in the process.

Jurgen Klopp’s side now look like serious title contenders and should push Manchester City, who are currently fourth in the table, to the wire providing their key players are fit and available over the next eight months.

Most of the Reds’ star players have all shone bright during the opening weeks of the season - including the likes of Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk - although it’s another, less heralded player whose performances have caught the eye.

Joe Gomez has partnered Van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool’s defence in all of Liverpool’s matches this term and performed exceptionally well.

In fact, the 21-year-old has been so solid that Dejan Lovren may have a difficult job forcing his way back into the Reds’ starting line-up once he returns from injury.

Gomez was called up to the most-recent England squad by Gareth Southgate and played the full 90 minutes against Spain, playing in a back-three alongside John Stones and Harry Maguire.

His performances have led to comparisons with Rio Ferdinand and even the legendary Bobby Moore.

Carragher speaks the truth about Gomez

However, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes such comparisons are, so far, undeserved and believes Gomes still has plenty to prove.

“Although he played at right-back a year ago, since assuming his favoured position Gomez has been likened to Bobby Moore and Rio Ferdinand,” Carragher wrote in his latest Telegraph column.

“This is stupidly premature, over the top praise.

“Gomez could become a top player, but to get there he will need to overcome sterner tests than Selhurst Park and the King Power Stadium.”

Carragher has spoken the truth. Gomez has done well against West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Leicester City.

In order to be compared to the likes of Ferdinand and Moore(!), Gomez must prove himself against the world’s best teams over the next five-to-ten seasons.

It’s far too premature to claim the young defender is in the same class as two all-time greats - and some people are getting a little carried away.

That said, Gomez has proven that he has a very bright future ahead of him and could potentially become a top-class centre-back over the coming seasons.
