Manchester United fans were pretty excited when the club announced the signing of Diogo Dalot from Porto for £19m on a five-year deal.

However, they weren't to know that the 19-year-old would be one of only three summer signings and it didn't exactly help that the right-back arrived injured.

Given Matteo Darmian's struggles, Ashley Young's World Cup hangover and Antonio Valencia's gradual decline, you can understand why United fans are desperate to see Dalot in action.

And it seems like they're closer to getting their wish, with the Portuguese completing 90 minutes in the Red Devils' U23 game against Reading on Friday night.

The game finished 1-1, with highly-rated striker Josh Bahui scoring for United.

Marcos Rojo made his return from injury, but a lot of the focus from fans was on the performance of Dalot.

And they made some interesting observations.

One thing that most Twitter users appeared to agree on was his ability to get forward, with Dalot supposedly playing as high as Tahith Chong at times.

But, there are concerns about his defensive capabilities once he makes the step up to the Premier League.

FANS REACT TO DALOT'S PERFORMANCE

Of course, being a bit lapse defensively after injury and having only played six senior games in your entire career can be forgiven.

Nevertheless, if Dalot is to have an impact in the first-team sooner rather than later, he'll have to find a perfect balance between attacking and defending.

With Valencia susceptible to injuries these days and Young far better out on the left, the onus will be on Dalot to adapt quickly.

After he arrived, Jose Mourinho said: “Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.

“He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.

“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”

Fans could get their first glimpse of Dalot when United take on Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday.
