Douglas Costa completely lost his head on Sunday afternoon. The Juventus winger was sent off for spitting in the mouth of an opponent during a 2-1 win over Sassuolo in Serie A.Costa, 28, was given his marching orders after VAR caught him spitting at Federico Di Francesco in the 93rd minute.Football fans on social media were calling for a lengthy ban after the skilful winger had already elbowed and headbutted the Sassuolo midfielder.Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri criticised Costa in his post-match interview."Maybe he was irritated at a foul before, but it doesn't matter, because this absolutely must not happen," Allegri told Sky in Italy.

"The one thing we must avoid doing is falling for provocation."

"We could've scored a third goal, but instead we started to play as individuals, we tried to dribble past everyone, this wound up the opposition, who then reacted badly and you get to situations like Douglas Costa."

Costa pens apology

The 28-year-old Brazilian was quick to post on Instagram after his disgraceful behaviour.

Costa apologised to the Juventus fans and his teammates but elected not to apologise to one man - Federico Di Francesco.

“I want to apologise to all the Juventus fans for this over the top reaction I had during today’s game,” wrote Costa on Instagram.

“I also apologise to my teammates, who are always by my side, in good and bad times.

"It was ugly, I am aware of that and I apologise to everyone for that.

“I want to make clear that this isolated conduct has nothing to do with what I’ve shown throughout my career.”

Di Francesco may have been expecting an apology but, evidently, he did not get one.
