On Sunday night, Hell in a Cell returned and it was arguably one of WWE's best PPVs of recent years.

It started in brilliant fashion when Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton clashed inside the structure, leaving everything on the line.

Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose later took on Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre in one of the best tag team matches we've seen in a very long time before AJ Styles controversially beat Samoa Joe.

Sadly though, if there was one thing that soured HIAC, it was the ending to the PPVs main event.

NO CONTEST FINISH

In the final match on the card, Braun Strowman faced Universal Champion Roman Reigns inside the cell - as "The Monster" cashed in his Money in the Bank title shot.

The pair absolutely brutalised each other and it's fair to say that the crowd were into it at first, but that all changed when a certain Beast made his return.

Shocking WWE fans, Brock Lesnar made his first appearance since SummerSlam, kicking the cell door off its hinges, before beating down both Reigns and Strowman.

HIAC went off the air as Brock returned to the back, leaving Roman and Braun motionless in the ring - as the championship match ended in a no contest.

BAD REACTION

Unsurprisingly, a finish like that was not well received by the fans in attendance - or any watching at home.

It seemed like a very strange way to end the show - especially considering Lesnar isn't even under contract with WWE anymore - and will be making his UFC return soon.

However, the ending was actually fully planned - and this outcome was what Vince McMahon originally had in mind

In fact, Dave Meltzer has since explained why WWE decided to go with this finish, even though they likely knew that fans would hate it.

THE ONLY OPTION?

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, per Ringside News, Meltzer said:

"The fans live were really upset with that finish. But what were they going to do? The only other finish was beating Strowman. I guess this eliminates the [MITB] briefcase, it has to."

"Although I’m sure there will be a rematch, there will be a million rematches."

Clearly, WWE wanted to book Reigns to win, but keep Strowman looking strong - and set up some future matches. With that in mind, this finish does make a lot more sense than we first thought.

Still, that won't make fans hate it any less.
