Eyebrows were raised when it was confirmed Jordan Henderson would start ahead of Naby Keita and Fabinho for Liverpool's game against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

Due to his involvement in the World Cup and recent friendlies with England, the 28-year-old had only started one game all season prior - against Leicester City.

So it was expected that Jurgen Klopp would opt for a midfield three of James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum and one of Keita or Fabinho instead.

But credit where it's due, Henderson was phenomenal from start to finish and put in a captain's performance.

Liverpool's skipper wasn't phased by the pace and skill of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe and made numerous important tackles to win back possession.

He also kept a cool head in a packed midfield to keep the ball, not to mention constantly barking orders at his teammates.

Klopp was hugely impressed by Henderson's display and said: "It's not only that we fight a lot and I love that, but we played football as well and that looked really confident.

CAPTAIN FANTASTIC

"We look now much more tuned than it maybe was in the past. We played a midfield who played a lot of times last season together. That was the reason for that.

"It was clear that Hendo would come back and what a brilliant performance of him. Physical-wise so good, because obviously as we know that the players after the World Cup normally struggle a bit.

"He is ready now and that's really important for us. We didn't learn a lot which we didn't know before, but it's nice to see that we can do it. That's it."

Henderson rewarded Klopp for his faith and now an appreciation video has emerged of the Englishman's best moments against PSG.

Neymar, Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria were all brilliantly dispossessed at least once by Henderson, whose energy and aggression was pivotal as Liverpool won 3-2.

Henderson may not have scored or assisted any of Liverpool's three goals, but there's an argument to be made that he was the real man of the match.

With summer signings Keita and Fabinho both sat on the bench the England international needed to step up and make a statement - and he did just that.
