All eyes were on Anfield last night when Champions League runners-up Liverpool welcomed the big-spending Paris Saint-Germain to Merseyside.

The prospect of two of the continent's most devastating attacking forces meeting each other head on meant that the tie was undoubtedly the pick of Matchday 1.

It did not disappoint.

Goals rained down in front of a fervent Anfield atmosphere as Liverpool cruised into a comfortable 2-0 lead in the first half before PSG clawed their way back into the game, equalising through Kylian Mbappe in the 83rd minute.

Having been well on top for most of the match, Liverpool would have been mightily disappointed to only leave with a point.

Thank goodness then for the one-eyed Brazilian, Roberto Firmino.

Firmino came off the bench to fire home in stoppage time and secure an incredibly valuable three points for his side.

Unsurprisingly, Jurgen Klopp went wild on the sideline with a trademark sprint down the sideline.

In the end, Liverpool were good value for their win, with their defence and midfield performing brilliantly to quell the threat of Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani.

Once the dust had settled on the frantic game, Klopp revealed the tactical plan his side had planned and implemented perfectly.

Trent Alexander-Arnold had the freedom of the Anfield right wing all night and it was no coincidence.

Klopp revealed that Liverpool had specifically targeted Neymar’s wing, knowing that he simply does not track back in the way he should.

“They are so strong and so good with the ball. We changed the system because we expected a change from them.

“Neymar on the left wing and Di Maira in the half-space, so made defending a bit difficult.

“We needed all our focus. We did really well. We covered a lot of yards and closed gaps. When we had the ball we used the right wing.

“Neymar is a world class player, but not defender so we tried to do that.”

Neymar was largely anonymous on the night and his defending, or lack thereof, certainly left his side dangerously exposed time and time again.

It was flaw expertly exploited by Liverpool and really something that Neymar needs to work on going forward.

Klopp’s side looked the real business though and will be desperate to go one step further in this year’s competition.
