If Paris Saint-Germain are to fulfil their ambition of going deep in the Champions League this season, they didn’t get off to the best of starts. The Ligue 1 giants suffered a 3-2 defeat when they visited Liverpool on Tuesday evening to snap a six-match winning streak in all competitions. We were treated to a superb contest at Anfield with Roberto Firmino stealing all three points right at the death after a draw looked inevitable following Kylian Mbappe’s 83rd-minute equaliser.Jurgen Klopp - who’s yet to seal his first trophy as Liverpool boss - will be hoping - or perhaps even confident - his men can repeat their efforts in Europe last season. On reflection of the Reds’ impressive display versus PSG, the 51-year-old was understandably thrilled in his post-match interview."If you play against PSG you have to step up, you have to reach the next level," he said, per Sky Sports."You play 95 per cent and you lose 5-0, 100 per cent and you win the game."Denying them so often, I don't think a lot of teams have done that."It was necessary we played good, the atmosphere was fantastic, so special to do these things in this stadium."One, two, three years ago the people would have thought that's a mountain we cannot climb."Klopp is certainly on the money when he says it’s not so long ago few would’ve given Liverpool a chance against the likes of PSG.Now though, the Reds are arguably the Premier League’s best hope of being crowned the best in Europe considering how they’ve progressed under the German since 2015.That said, the Premier League has been poorly represented in the deeper stages of the Champions League of late, and Edinson Cavani believes the supposed disparity between French and English clubs is overstated. In fact, the Uruguayan says PSG's Premier League counterparts would struggle to hold their own in Ligue 1.“There are the best teams in Europe playing in the Champions League, and when you face them sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose,” he told reporters after his side’s loss at Anfield, via Goal.“I would like to see some teams from England playing in French football so we see how good they are.“I wouldn’t disparage the French league, as France are the current world champions and many of their players are in Ligue 1.“And French teams have been playing the later stages of the Champions League in the last few years, so I just think this is football, and it is what it is.”Fair play to Cavani for standing up for his club and their peers, but unsurprisingly, his hypothetical challenge to the Premier League has got a reaction from fans.
