It's fair to say Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League debut with Juventus didn't go to plan. One of the biggest motivations behind his move away from Real Madrid was believed to be a desire to win Europe's crowning jewel at a third club, but his campaign began in unwanted fashion.Making the away trip to Valencia for their opening fixture, Ronaldo was impressing and creating a number of opportunities before controversy struck. The game was stopped around the half-hour mark for an off-the-ball incident concerning Ronaldo and the referee swiftly consulted with one of his fellow officials.Just a few seconds later and the decision was taken to send off Ronaldo, giving him the first Champions League red card of his career in the process.

Ronaldo dismissed vs Valencia

Not only that but Ronaldo was particularly emotional about the incident and was seen in tears as he walked down the tunnel.

After all, the sending off could see him miss a huge game with Manchester United that would prove a crucial match in the group stages as well as a fairytale reunion.

However, there is - of course - an appeals system and the question must be asked: 'was Ronaldo correctly dismissed?'

Clearer angle emerges of the incident

That was a question that proved pretty difficult to answer in the immediate aftermath with the television footage proving unconvincing, tracking the ball as opposed to Ronaldo.

Cue BT Sport.

The English broadcaster came to the rescue and unveiled revealing new footage that shows the incident up close and personal.

And, well, the dismissal looks pretty soft - check out the video below:

Fans react on Twitter

Football fans certainly weren't convinced by the red card and no more so after seeing Ronaldo allegedly grabbing the hair of Jeison Murillo.

Take a look at the reaction here:

Rio Ferdinand was one of many to react to the decision, tweeting that Ronaldo should appeal and also discussing the episode during his duties as a pundit.

He noted during the half-time break: "I don’t know. I think it [the red card] is inconclusive really, it’s hard to see.

"I’m sure that Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus will appeal that.

"I think the emotion you can see coming out here, I think he’s going back to Old Trafford – he’ll miss that game – he wants to play football, you can see that.

"I think he’s got room to appeal, though."
