Manchester United made no mistakes in their Champions League opener with victory at Young Boys on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils endured a tricky opening 35 minutes in Switzerland and David de Gea needed to make some crucial saves, but United never looked back when they broke the deadlock.

Paul Pogba was at his brilliant best on the night, opening the scoring with a superb left-footed strike and eventually putting United clear with a neatly dispatched penalty.

However, there was still time for an extra present for Jose Mourinho as Anthony Martial ended something of a goal drought by his standards.

Although being aided by a deflection, the Frenchman showed neat composure through on goal to slot past David von Ballmoos and round off the scoring.

Martial impressed vs Young Boys

It was an impressive performance from Martial and a timely one with opportunities proving few and far between in the Premier League so far.

Fans were pleased with his incisive runs and creativity, with some even noting that he achieved more than Alexis Sanchez had in the opening weeks of the season.

The supporter-base has always backed Martial in the knowledge of his brilliant talent and desperately want him to achieve his potential at Old Trafford.

What Martial did at full-time

And that brilliant player-fan relationship was on full display after Martial's performance vs Young Boys.

In fact, a number of journalists and supporters couldn't help pointing out Martial's actions towards the aways fans and it went down a treat on Twitter.

The 22-year-old was the last United player to leave the pitch, spent 'ages' in the corner with the aways and thoroughly clapped them as they sang his signature chant.

It was brilliant to see from Martial - and check out the video below:

Now that's what you call mutual respect.

Martial was clearly aware of how supportive the United fans were of him throughout the match and wanted to repay the faith by showing his gratitude.

It's always great to see top-level footballers showing respect to the supporters and if Martial is going to breakthrough at United, it will be with the full backing of the fans.

And there's every reason to suggest he could push on under Mourinho this season with more performances like that.

Besides, Mourinho had plenty to be happy about and was sure to praise Paul Pogba amongst others, remarking after the game: "I felt Paul was a bit tired in the last part of the game, but he was class.

"He gave the team the pace we needed at times, keeping possession and keeping control of the tempo. The goal was good, and the penalty showed personality."

Mourinho will be hoping for more of the same and from Martial in particular.
