Juventus will be without Cristiano Ronaldo for their upcoming Champions League clash against Young Boys following his controversial red card against Valencia on Wednesday night. The 33-year-old, who joined Juve in a £100 million deal from Real Madrid in the summer, was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball altercation with Jeison Murillo.Initial replays appeared innocuous but further footage showed that Ronaldo had tugged on Murillo’s hair.Ronaldo, who left the Mestalla pitch in tears, will definitely miss Juventus’s next Champions League match and could be banned for a further two European games once UEFA review the incident. If they believe a serious offence has been committed, Ronaldo will also miss the doubler-header against his former club Manchester United.German referee Felix Brych’s decision to show Ronaldo a straight red card has split opinion.Needless to say, all of his fans believe the decision is absurd - including his former Real Madrid teammate, Theo Hernandez.

Bizarre conspiracy theory emerges

Others, though, feel that Ronaldo gave the referee a decision to make with his actions and, subsequently, can have few complaints.

However, journalist Edu Aguirre - speaking on behalf of Spanish TV show El Chiringuito - has come up with a bizarre conspiracy theory.

Per ESPN’s Dan Thomas, Aguirre argues Ronaldo may have been sent off as revenge for not attending UEFA’s awards gala last month.

Erm… surely that cannot be true, can it? It sounds far-fetched in the extreme.

Ronaldo didn’t attend the awards ceremony, according to Spanish newspaper AS, because he knew he wasn’t going to win the evening’s most coveted award: the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year 2017-18.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was instead beaten to the individual accolade by his former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric.

"Football is played on the field and that’s where Cristiano won,” Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes said, per The Sun, after Modric won the award. “He scored 15 goals, carried Real Madrid on his back and conquered the Champions League again.

"It’s ridiculous, shameful. The winner is not in doubt, as Ronaldo is the best in his position."

Imagine what he will say if Modric also beats his client to the 2018 Ballon d’Or.

The midfielder, who helped Croatia reach the 2018 World Cup final, is now 2/1 to win the Ballon d’Or later this year.

Ronaldo remains the favourite, although this odds of winning the award have drifted slightly after his sending off.
