Juventus recorded an impressive victory over Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday.

But it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s sending off that attracted the most attention following a memorable night at the Mestalla.

The Portuguese star’s first appearance for the Old Lady in Europe lasted just 29 minutes.

He was sent off in controversial style, referee Felix Brych getting his red card out after Ronaldo clashed with Jeison Murillo.

It prompted an emotional reaction from Ronaldo, who pleaded his innocence as he left the pitch in tears.

Ronaldo will now miss Juve’s Champions League tie against Young Boys on October 2.

It is thought that his ban won’t be extended any further, though, meaning he will be ready to face his former team Manchester United on October 23.

Ronaldo was lucky in Spain

Spanish football journalist Rik Sharma claimed on Twitter that Ronaldo “got away with around 20 red cards at Real Madrid” for various outburst, including lashing out and kicking opponents.

And a video has surfaced that shows Ronaldo's he played for Los Blancos.

“No more Florentino [Perez, Real Madrid’s president] protecting you buddy @Cristiano. It’s all over,” the tweet, posted by @Magic0fBarca, read.

There are some pretty ugly actions, including a clear elbow on former Barcelona full-back Dani Alves.

So, while it’s unfair to claim Ronaldo received protection at Real Madrid, it may be right to say he got away with a few red card offences.

The Portugal international had just got his Juventus career up and running; he scored a brace in the 2-1 win over Sassuolo on Sunday.

The red card is a blemish but at least it’s thought he will be able to return to Old Trafford next month.

Rio Ferdinand believes that part of the reason Ronaldo started to cry is because he thought he may not be able to come back to the club he enjoyed six successful years at.

“I think he sees goals in this group, for one, and he’s going back to his old club at Manchester United - I think that’s brought on emotion,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“Sometimes some players can’t control that.”
