Arsenal fans breathed a huge sigh of relief when Unai Emery named his starting XI for Vorskla Poltava.

After weeks of calling upon Emery to give some of the summer signings an opportunity from the start, he finally shuffled the pack for the club's Europa League opener on Thursday night.

Bernd Leno was given his opportunity between the sticks despite fans predicting he would become number one from the very start this season.

So far, Petr Cech has been given the nod and has featured for every minute of Arsenal's Premier League campaign despite concerns about his distribution.

However, perhaps the most note-worthy change was the long-awaited decision to start Lucas Torreira who has impressed Arsenal fans with his appearances from the bench.

Torreira makes first Arsenal start

Even pundits such as Ian Wright have become tired of him being constantly left on the sidelines and he was given his opportunity to shine against Vorskla.

Much to Arsenal fans' satisfaction, Torreira was brilliant throughout the game and received wide praise on social media for controlling the midfield from deep.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the man to open the scoring for the Gunners but Torreira sparked excitement with an inventive free-kick that came inches from finding the net, too.

Torreira's heroic moment vs Vorskla

Martin Keown felt it necessary to praise the Uruguayan for his 'tenacity' at half-time and that point was no more apparent than in the closing minutes of the first-half.

After muscling Yuri Kolomoets off the ball and going to ground, Torreira made a desperate attempt to regain possession for Arsenal.

Without the time to stand up and attempt a sliding tackle, he went in for a head-first challenge that narrowly missed the target.

Arsenal fans have reacted on Twitter

Unsurprisingly, this remarkable level of determination went down a treat with Arsenal fans who proclaimed him as a 'warrior.'

It contributed to him receiving rave reviews on his first start for the club and you can take a look at the pick of the tweets here:

You certainly can't fault Torreira for passion.

The 22-year-old is a bundle of energy in the Arsenal midfield and worked tirelessly to ensure the Gunners maintained dominance over their Ukrainian opponents.

And Arsenal fans shouldn't be too surprised by Torreira attempting a 'head-tackle' in the game because he was up to similar antics during the World Cup.

On no less than two occasions, the Uruguayan attempted to win the ball with his head and had more success on the international stage.

It's rare that such a challenge is seen in football but it's always incredibly impressive when executed well - note Eric Abidal and even Phil Jones.

And although Torreira missed in this particular game, it goes to show Arsenal have signed a player who will give his absolute all for the team.
