Troy Deeney has enjoyed an excellent start to the 2017/18 campaign.

Watford currently lie fourth in the Premier League table and the 30-year-old striker has been crucial to their early success.

Javi Gracia, Watford's manager, praised Deeney after he scored his second goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Spurs.

“He is the captain, he is the spirit and you can see he always tries to set an example and help everyone,” said Gracia.

“I arrived in January and from the first day he has hasn’t changed. He always wants to win, works a lot and tries to be a good example for the rest of the players as captain.”

Deeney, 30, is still yet to win his first England cap and Jamie Vardy's recent retirement appeared to open the door for him.

However, Gareth Southgate - who continually places trust in youngsters - elected to overlook some of the Premier League's in-form strikers for the recent matches against Spain and Switzerland.

Deeney has reacted to Southgate's decision to omit him.

"I respected his decision, I can’t say I was overjoyed not to be in it, I’m one of those that believe you have to earn it," Deeney told The Premier League Show.

"I don’t think four games is anywhere near enough to say I should be in the England team."

But Deeney was confused by the inclusion of Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck, who was part of the 23-man World Cup squad too.

"If you look at a Danny Ings, Glenn Murray, Callum Wilson, we would probably all be arguing well what do I need to be in the team?

"Because no offence to Danny Welbeck, I’ve got a lot of time for Danny Welbeck, but he’s not playing but he’s still being picked, so is it a case that’s just the team?"

Deeney has a strong point - Welbeck has only managed 31 minutes of Premier League football this season.

The 27-year-old Mancunian has racked up 42 caps for his country despite his status as a squad player at Arsenal.
