The New York Knicks are in a prime position to hit the free agency market hard next summer if they play their cards right in the meantime.

They'll have to make a couple of moves in order to take full opportunity of the market, but if they do, they could end up signing two big name free agents next year.

This could include from a list of Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Kawhi Leonard, depending on who is available by the end of the 2018-19 season.

Some players, like Butler following his trade request with the Minnesota Timberwolves, could be available sooner than that, something which many might think the Knicks could take advantage of.

However, according to Knicks president Steve Mills and head coach David Fizdale, that's not the team's plan.

Mills said, via NBC Sports: “We’re committed to following a plan and not just shifting and pivoting because we see something that we think is attractive and might fast track something.

“I’ve seen that happen and go wrong too many times and that’s not what we’re going to do.”

Fizdale added: “We don’t want to jump at the shiny things. We want to make solid decisions and be patient with this process.”

Mills stated as well that the Knicks will be planning to go after players when they're in the best position to do so that won't cost them draft picks, which will be free agency next summer.

He said: “We feel comfortable with our organization and where we’re going and what we’re developing here and we think that when it’s time for us to go after free agents, we’ll be a place to attract free agents and we shouldn’t use our draft picks like that.”

Recent reports have stated that the Knicks will make some roster changes in order to free up some cap space, one which includes parting ways with Joakim Noah before the start of training camp.

One thing the Knicks won't be doing though is chasing after players that could potentially be free agents next summer, as they've clearly learned from their past mistakes with Carmelo Anthony in 2011.
