Real Madrid's third consecutive Champions League triumph somewhat overshadowed a fantastic season from Barcelona last year.

Ernesto Valverde led the club to a domestic double in his first season at Camp Nou, with Barca only losing one game along the way.

That's something that few would have seen coming the previous August, after Neymar rocked the football world with his move to Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Barca looking helpless.

Things then looked worse after they paid an extravagant fee for the relatively-unproven Ousmane Dembele before failing to get a deal for Philippe Coutinho over the line.

Coutinho would eventually join in January and by then Valverde's side were coasting at the top of La Liga as Real were left to focus solely on European football.

Barca, inspired by Lionel Messi of course, didn't lose a game until the penultimate match when Levante recorded a wildly unpredictable 5-4 win over the champions-elect.

Still, the team eventually recorded a 93-point season as they lifted the title, adding to the Copa del Rey they'd win the previous month.

Despite the incredible season, however, there remain huge doubts over Valverde's future at Barcelona as a report in Marca suggests that neither club or manager are eager to continue.

To find out why, you have to go back to the undoubted low-point of Barcelona's season: the 3-0 defeat to AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

The result overturned a 4-1 first-leg lead to knock Barca and Valverde out of the Champions League in embarrassing circumstances, piling the pressure on the manager.

Marca reports that Josep Maria Bartomeu, Barcelona's president, still hasn't gotten over the result - a stance he made clear by leaking his dissatisfaction to the press at the time - and he remains unsure over Valverde's ability.

Valverde, on the other hand, still hasn't gotten over Bartomeu's attitude after the defeat and the relationship remains damaged.

Things didn't improve over the summer, either, as the sale of Paulinho and signing of Malcom were against the manager's wishes.

Valverde has stuck with his first eleven this season, too, which worries the club as they believe he tired the players out last season which resulted in the Roma defeat.

His contract is up after this season - although there is an option for another year if both parties agree - but neither is happy to sign a new one.

And so it's a strange time at Barcelona; they won the league, won the cup, and are favourites for the Champions League and yet it seems no one is happy at Camp Nou.
