Tottenham started the season brilliantly, winning all three of their Premier League fixtures before the international break.

They beat Newcastle United away in their opening game of the season and followed that up with a 3-1 win over Fulham. Their most eye-catching result, though, was the magnificent 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, the 2-1 defeat against Watford followed by the international break has seen their form take a worrying nosedive.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Wembley last weekend but their high-flying opponents might have scored five or six on a better day, they were that dominant.

Three days after that, they were beaten 2-1 by Inter Milan, despite taking the lead through Christian Eriksen.

Three defeats on the bounce means Spurs can ill-afford to slip up away from home against Brighton on Saturday evening.

Currently sixth in the Premier League table, a six-point gap has already opened up between themselves and joint-league leaders Chelsea and Liverpool. It’s already difficult to imagine them winning the league this season.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that we’re not even in October yet. There’s an awfully long way to go between now and the end of the season and plenty will happen.

Crouch speaks the truth about Spurs

Former Spurs striker Peter Crouch has spoken about his former club’s recent form in a section of his latest Daily Mail column - and he makes some very valid points.

First off, he points out that people are getting too carried away by recent results and believes talk of Spurs’ demise is extremely premature.

“One thing that annoys me in football is when people get carried away by results after four or five weeks of a new season,” Crouch said.

“So, you can be sure there is little chance of me jumping into the debate about Tottenham and declaring that they are finished, having lost three games on the spin, including two to Liverpool and Inter Milan in the space of 72 hours.

“I said on the opening day of the campaign, before they'd travelled to Newcastle, that their business in the summer was positive even though they had not signed any players. It was crucial to get Harry Kane and several other stars on long-term contracts.

“Nothing is going to change my view that they will finish in the top four again.”

Crouch admits, however, that Pochettino has to strengthen his squad with at least one new face in January after failing to sign a single player during the summer.

“I am, though, slightly concerned about them at present and I'd be really worried if Kane, Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen ended up with a long-term injury,” Crouch added.

“It certainly wouldn't do them any harm if Mauricio Pochettino happened to buy someone in January. Contrary to what you might think, players love it when new faces arrive as it provides competition and gives everyone a lift. Pochettino, of course, will know that better than anyone.”

It’s hard to argue with any of Crouch’s points there.

Tottenham still possess an excellent squad and one of the world’s best coaches in Pochettino.

They might be going through a sticky patch but it’s only a matter of time before they start winning matches again.

Write them off at your peril.
