The 2018 World Cup finals proved that England have many talented footballers at their disposal right now.Gareth Southgate’s side reached the semi-finals of the showpiece international tournament for the first time since 1990 and were unfortunate not to reach the final.Harry Kane won the coveted Golden Boot award after hitting the back of the net six times while the likes of Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire and Jesse Lingard became heroes in the eyes of English football fans. For so many years, they same long-suffering supporters have seen talented players flourish for their club sides but flatter to deceive on the international stage. This summer, however, was totally different. But who is the best English player playing in the Premier League right now? This very question was debated by several pundits on BT Sport on Saturday morning and it sparked plenty of debate.

BT Sport pundits disagree over best English player

Robbie Savage asked the question and former Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen replied: “It has to be Harry Kane. Who else is there?”

Owen still reckons Kane, who would surely fetch the largest transfer fee of any English player if he was sold right now, is the best despite his unconvincing start to the 2018-19 campaign.

The 25-year-old, who has looked a little fatigued in recent weeks, has only managed to score two goals in six appearances this term.

Chris Sutton, however, totally disagreed with Owen’s opinion.

“James Milner!” Sutton immediately responded. “We’re talking about here and now… James Milner.”

Emile Heskey agreed with Sutton rather than his former striker partner Owen on this one.

And to be fair - both Sutton and Heskey have a point.

Although he no longer plays for England, 32-year-old Milner has been fantastic for Liverpool this season. Even though he plays as a central midfielder, he actually has the same number of goals as Kane this season.

He netted his second goal of the campaign in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Paris Saint-Germain in mid-week and is currently keeping the likes of Naby Keita and Fabinho out of the starting line-up.
