Six games played, six games won, top of the Premier League table - safe to say Liverpool are in dreamland at the moment.

Goals from Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah sealed a comfortable 3-0 win for the Reds over Southampton on Saturday to maintain their 100% record.

Jurgen Klopp made numerous changes to his squad for the game - Matip and Xherdan Shaqiri came in for Joe Gomez and Naby Keita respectively - but in the end the result was the same.

Victory meant Liverpool leapfrogged Chelsea into first and Klopp couldn't be happier with what he saw from his players.

"It as good," said the German, "but you saw it needed to be because Southampton were not bad, they played good football.

"I had an idea and it didn’t work out 100 per cent. We changed system obviously to bring [Shaqiri] in a comfortable position.

"We wanted to make it a bit tough for Southampton to be really prepared for what we do. We knew the two tall boys in the centre would play so we thought to bring [Salah] there.

SIX OUT OF SIX

"Offensively, it was really good; defensively, we obviously weren’t used to it."

All three of Liverpool's goals came in the opening 45 minutes and their star player was arguably Shaqiri, whose thunderous free-kick struck the woodwork and set up Salah for the third.

And yet, in a strange and unprecedented move, Klopp replaced the Swiss - who was making his full debut - for James Milner at half-time.

Klopp reportedly substituted Shaqiri for tactical reasons and so that he can be fresh for Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea.

And according to the Liverpool manager himself, he took Shaqiri to one side during the break to explain the decision - something he never usually does apparently.

"It was not easy, to be honest," said Klopp of subbing Shaqiri. "It's my job to sometimes deliver news nobody wants to hear.

"That's how it was at half-time but he is a fantastic boy. I explained it to him so it's no problem. Usually I don't explain substitutions at half-time but I thought it made sense.

"It’s just good to have him; the free-kick was outstanding. That's good. He was good and I liked it."

Fair play to Klopp. It's his decision when to make substitutions and who to replace, so he doesn't owe any of the players explanations.

But he knew Shaqiri will have been disappointed after having such a positive first half, so he made an exception and told him how it is.
