Arsenal's goalkeeping situation has caused plenty of controversy this season.

The 2017-18 campaign was a tough year for Petr Cech and many wondered whether he was past his sell-by date, with the arrival of Unai Emery looking ominous for his future.

That was especially the case when the new manager decided to sign German goalkeeper Bernd Leno in a move that many thought would spell the end for Cech.

There were even transfer rumours suggesting Cech could leave the club in the summer amid speculation he'd spend the final year of his Arsenal contract on the bench.

Fast forward to September, though, and Leno has only made one appearance for the Gunners with Emery taking the bold decision to stick with Cech.

Cech selected for Everton game

It was a decision met with great bewilderment by Arsenal fans who criticised his early performances and wanted Leno to come into the team given his superior distribution.

Nevertheless, Emery has stood by his judgement and Cech was once again deployed between the sticks for the visit of Everton.

And, well, the 36-year-old was absolutely superb and made a number of crucial saves.

Arsenal fans react on Twitter

Despite facing a series of one-on-one opportunities, the ex-Chelsea shot stopper propelled Arsenal to victory by ensuring they entered the half-time break with a clean sheet.

All that considered, fans gave Cech his due praise across social media and even gained some appreciation for Emery's move to keep him as number one.

There were even suggestions that, in spite of Cech's struggles with distribution, his shot stopping skills were not only the reason for the clean sheet but better than those of Leno's.

In summary, fans are happy to back Emery's move with Cech playing like this - check out the tweets below:

Playing Cech does raise questions over the reasoning behind a move for Leno but Emery seems justified with his hierarchy.

As long as Cech continues to perform as brilliantly as he did against Everton, would it really be fair to introduce Leno even with his distribution?

The performances of Alisson Becker and Ederson in England demonstrate the importance of goalkeepers playing with their feet but - at the end of the day - nothing is more crucial than shot stopping.

No matter where you stand on the debate, though, it's good to see Cech receiving the praise he deserves for a truly impressive display.

Even the odd misplaced pass is nothing amid so many crucial saves.
