Lionel Messi leaves three players on the floor with mesmerising run against Girona

Barcelona were looking to maintain their 100% win record in La Liga this season when they hosted Girona on Sunday night.

Samuel Umtiti, Ivan Rakitic and Philippe Coutinho all started on the bench and their presence was missed as the Spanish champions drew 2-2.

Lionel Messi took over from the legendary Andres Iniesta as Barca’s club captain this summer and he’s enjoyed a superb 2018-19 campaign so far.

Before the Girona clash, the Argentinian had registered seven goals and two assists in six outings, including a Champions League hat-trick against PSV Eindhoven.

Messi opened the scoring at the Nou Camp, but there was a sensational moment before that in which he totally bamboozled Girona’s backline.

Messi produces again against Girona

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner gave Ernesto Valderde’s men a 19th-minute lead when he ran on to Arturo Vidal’s pass and fired a precise first-time strike past Bono.

However, seven minutes before that, Messi and Vidal combined once more, and although it didn’t end in a goal, it left everyone watching in total awe.

Lurking around the edge of the box, the Barca forward saw a flick from summer signing Vidal come his way, and what happened next was pure magic.

As you can see below, Messi embarked on a mesmerising run and managed to leave three Girona players on the turf through his sublime close control.

If that wasn’t enough, the 31-year-old ended the dribble by producing a shot at goal which very nearly found it’s way into the back of the net.

Girona simply couldn’t get near Messi during the brilliant moment, and football fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts – here are some of the best tweets.

With Messi in this kind of form, don’t be surprised if Barcelona retain the La Liga title this season in addition to mounting a serious challenge to win the Champions League.
