Cristiano Ronaldo caused a stir when he decided against attending the Champions League draw this season.

The Monaco ceremony saw Europe's governing body hand out a series of awards to celebrate the best performers of the 2017-18 season and Ronaldo was on the list of nominees.

However, it was his former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric who took home the prize and his decision not to show his face caused plenty of controversy.

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri was asked about the episode last month and replied: "It was his personal decision and like all personal decisions, it is to be respected."

That considered, reports that Ronaldo will snub an appearance at this week's FIFA 'The Best' awards will also raise a few eyebrows.

FIFA's 'The Best' award ceremony

The 33-year-old is listed alongside Mohamed Salah and Modric for the main prize, having collected the trophy in both 2016 and 2017.

However, it's looking increasingly unlikely that Ronaldo will take his seat in London when the awards are handed out, whether to him or somebody else.

That might seem rather strange considering he is also being considered for the Puskas Award - for his Juventus bicycle kick - and will inevitably be included in the FIFA FIFPro Team of the Year.

Ronaldo won't attend because of Wednesday game

So, why is Ronaldo considering another award ceremony snub?

Well, according to Spanish publication Marca, Ronaldo has a very good reason for giving the event a wide berth with Juventus' gruelling fixture list coming into play.

Like his fellow Juventus teammates, the Portuguese won't be attending because Juventus are playing on Wednesday and will still be recovering from their Sunday night match with Frosinone.

What's more, Ronaldo has already informed the organisers that he won't be attending.

But Barcelona and Real play on Wednesday, too

However, there's a discrepancy with Ronaldo's reasoning and that's because Barcelona and Real Madrid players will be attending despite also playing on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi is believed to be traveling to London, despite not being nominated for the main award, having just played Girona on the Sunday and facing Leganes three days later.

Similarly, Raphael Varane, Thibaut Courtois and Modric are all expected despite an upcoming game with Sevilla on - you guessed it - Wednesday.

What makes the situation even more interesting is that Marca believes that Modric will be taking home the main award again.

So, naturally, it raises questions about Ronaldo's reasoning, even if the logic seems sound at first look.

There's every reason to suggest the move could have been sanctioned by Juventus and travel times from Italy are slightly longer than Spain but it still seems bizarre.

Whether or not the decision is as simple as the Wednesday game, it certainly won't be a good look for Ronaldo if he misses another crowning moment for Modric.

Only time will tell exactly who does and does not take their seat in London but a footballing seating plan has never seemed so interesting.
