The Premier League table is beginning to take shape as we approach October.

Liverpool are riding high in pole position having secured 18 points from a possible 18, scoring 14 goals and conceded just two in the process.

Manchester City and Chelsea are two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s men, having won five and drawn one of their opening six games.

Then there’s Watford, who won their first four games of the campaign but have since picked up one point from their last two matches, while Tottenham are in fifth position after bouncing back against Brighton on Saturday following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Watford and Liverpool.

In sixth are Arsenal, who have now won their last four league games under Unai Emery, while Manchester United are in seventh following their 1-1 draw against Wolves.

Following Sunday’s action, which saw the Gunners record a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Emirates Stadium, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was asked which two clubs he thinks will miss out on the Premier League’s top four this season - and his answer was very interesting.

“On the evidence of what we've seen I'd say Arsenal or Manchester United from what we've seen in these opening six games,” the Liverpool legend was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“The others look a little bit further up.

“Tottenham have had a little bit of a wobble, a good result for them on Saturday but it will be really tight and it always is with the top six.”

So, there you have it. Even though only six games have been played, Carragher is predicting that the season will end badly for both Arsenal and United.

As it happens, the bookmakers’ current odds concur with Carragher’s opinion.

Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham are all priced at shorter odds than Arsenal and Man Utd.

Interestingly, they also believe 10th-placed Wolves have a much better chance of securing a shock top-four finish than Watford do.

While Emery could be forgiven if he finishes outside of a very competitive top four in his debut season at Arsenal, the same can’t be said of Jose Mourinho.

The United boss was hired to help the club win the Premier League title. Now in his third season, finishing outside the top four would represent a significant failure on the Portuguese coach’s behalf.
