Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated world football over the last decade.

They've each won five Ballon d'Or awards and the 33-year-old Juventus forward is the favourite to beat Luka Modric later this year.

Ronaldo enjoyed another magnificent season at Real Madrid - leading them to more Champions League success - before completing a shock move to Serie A.

But now he, and Messi, are set to be judges after a new award was added to the Ballon d’Or family.

They'll be the only active footballers on a 33-man panel voting on the winner of the 'Kopa Trophy'.

Bobby Charlton, Michael Owen and Kevin Keegan will also get to cast a vote because the panel is made up of every surviving Ballon d'Or winner since its inception in 1958.

French striker Raymond Kopa won the inaugural Ballon d’Or sixty years ago - and the trophy has been named in his honour.

Mbappe the favourite

The 33-man panel will be voting for the best young player aged under 21.

PSG forward Kylian Mbappe won the FIFA Young Player Award for his excellent performances at the 2018 World Cup.

And the 19-year-old superstar is the overwhelming favourite to win the Kopa Trophy in its maiden year.

It will be presented on December 3, along with the Ballon d’Or Feminin and the Ballon d’Or itself.

Two new awards have been announced - and the finalists for all three awards will be unveiled on October 8.

France and Lyon defender Wendy Renard is delighted that women now have an equivalent Ballon d'Or award.

“The birth of the Ballon d’Or Feminin is a step further for the evolution of our sport,” she told France Football, as per Goal.

“It’s a step forward. Women’s football is evolving and inequality is shrinking, even if there is still room for improvement.”

A panel of journalists specialising in women’s football will be voting for the winner.
