Mohamed Salah was on the three-man shortlist alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric to win FIFA’s The Best award on Monday evening.Ronaldo didn’t travel to the ceremony, which was held at the Royal Festival Hall in London.Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the Portugal international didn’t attend due to Juventus’ schedule - they played on Sunday night and have another Serie A game on Wednesday.Yet it’s easy to wonder whether Ronaldo had learned of Modric’s success before the announcement and decided against attending, which was reportedly the case for last month’s UEFA’s award ceremony.Ronaldo scored 15 goals in the Champions League last season and after Real Madrid’s success over Liverpool in the final, it seemed inevitable that The Best award was headed his way.But then came the World Cup, where Ronaldo and Modric had contrasting experiences. The Juve star scored a memorable hat-trick against Spain but Portugal exited the competition at the round-of-16 stage.

Salah's interesting evening

Meanwhile, Modric led Croatia to the final and collected the Golden Ball award.

There was a great deal of confusion when Salah received the Puskas Award for his effort against Everton.

Over Gareth Bale’s stunning goal in the Champions League final, or Ronaldo’s overhead kick against Juventus, it seemed bizarre.

But it wasn’t the only thing that caused a stir among football fans.

While Salah was named in the final three to win the main prize, he was nowhere to be seen in the FIFPro World XI.

Instead Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Eden Hazard and Kylian Mbappe all made up the attacking positions.

It makes little sense to have Salah nominated as one of the three best players in the world but to exclude him from the best XI players.

There was plenty of reaction on Twitter to Salah’s snub.

It's easy to understand the confusion.

FIFA may have some explaining to do.
